Sandi Wheaton is a freelance photographer and tour director based in the Windsor/Detroit area.
In 2009, after a 12-year career as a corporate video producer for General Motors, she was downsized during the automotive crisis. Sandi used the time off as an opportunity to fulfill a long-held dream of traveling and photographing historic Route 66. That six-week journey spawned her award-winning travel blog PictureRoute66.com, lots of publicity, and a newfound determination to redesign her life as a self-employed freelancer.
After becoming Tour Director certified in 2010, Sandi started leading travel tours for various companies, including Caravan Tours, AHI Travel and Go Atlanta and Beyond. During the winter sessions of 2014 and 2015, she taught Digital Photography in Forensic Science at the University of Windsor, and serves as a tour management instructor for the International Guide Academy. She also has an extensive art resume, with many group and solo exhibitions in both the USA and Canada. Her work has received numerous awards and arts grants, and has been published widely. Sandi's Route 66 quest was recently featured in Chris Guillebeau's best-selling book The Happiness of Pursuit (Harmony Press, 2014). Sandi has spoken about her reinvention story to groups small and large, from the local photo clubs in her home town to the 2,500 crowd at World Domination Summit in Portland, OR.
